Spiritual Wellness

Activity:Attend a special seminar: “The Importance of Spiritual Wellness in Supporting Whole-Body Wellness
Tuesday February 26 at 7:00pm

On Tuesday I attended a seminar in the quiet lounge in the Wellness Center about spiritual wellness and whole body wellness in relation to spirituality. The speaker spoke to the entire group for a while and then we broke off into groups and talked about both what the speaker talked and our own spirituality. I consider myself to be only somewhat spiritual, so it was very interesting to hear what other people believed and hear about how he or she treated spirituality within his or her lives. I was a little nervous that I would not fit in well with the other people being that I am not as spiritual as they are, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they all were very nice and fun to talk to. It was a fun seminar, and I met some new people and am excited to hear from them again.

I hope everyone else is having good luck with their Pursuit of Wellness.

Occupational Wellness

Activity: Schedule an appointment to build a resume at Career Services
Monday February 6 & Tuesday February 7 at 1:30pm

On Monday afternoon I called and scheduled an appointment with Career Services to build a resume, and was able to get in Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 for the meeting. It was very nice to have someone who knows what they are talking about look over my resume and help me make changes for the better. Other people have given me ideas and tips for writing resumes before, but I have noticed that one person will say one thing, and another will say the exact opposite. This gets frustrating and confusing times. Career Services gave me the tips guidelines that made sense and I feel will help me make a better resume.

Intellectual Wellness

Activity: See the Winged Shadows Life Among Birds Exhibit at the ND Museum of Art

I went to the North Dakota Museum of Art on Saturday to see the Life among Birds Exhibit. I had been a long time since I had been there so I was excited to go again. I was not sure what expect with this exhibit so I spent quite a bit of time looking at everything. I liked the black and white prints on canvas the most. I appreciated the painting and drawings for what they were, but I personally did not enjoy them as much. As I was checking out, I was told that the noises that were coming from the nest built on the truss sculpture were made from car alarms and horns that were manipulated. I thought that was very cool because that’s the exact type of thing I do at my job. Overall, I really enjoyed the exhibit and I would recommend it to anyone who has not seen it yet.

Social Wellness

Dimension: Social Wellness
Activity: Attend Men’s Basketball vs. NJIT
Thursday, January 26 @ 7pm

I decided to go the UND Men’s Basketball game on Thursday because I had never been to one before. I work for the Ralph and the Betty and I’ve never had the day off on a game day before. I got a student ticket at the box office and sat in the student section with some friends that were there also. It was fun to just relax and enjoy the game and have a good time with the friends I was with. Plus I got to see Patrick Mitchell reach 1,000 points in his career, which made him the 31st player in UND history to do that. I hope I am able to watch more games in the future, because I had a lot of fun

Emotional Wellness

Activity: Contribute to the “Before I Die” Project
Wednesday, January 25th at 12:30pm

I stopped by and visited the Student Involvement Office while I was on a class break on Wednesday to check out the “Before I Die” project and add something to the wall. It was very interesting to see all of the things that people had added to the board, and there was a lot more than I expected to be on there. I spent a while reading the board and thinking about what I wanted to write on there. There were many things that I wanted to put on the wall, and I finally made my decision and decided to put “Buy a House” on the wall

It was very inspiring to see some of the ideas that others had put on the wall. It was also eye-opening to see how many different things were on there. Some that I also want to, and some not.

Environmental Wellness: Donate!

Dimension: Environmental
Activity: Make a donation to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or any community food pantry
Saturday, January 21st @ 3pm

The activity for the Environmental Dimension I chose to do was donating to the Goodwill. I had a bag of clothes that I did not wear anymore which were in good condition. I mostly had winter clothing in the bag such as a couple of jackets and snow pants that did not fit me anymore. It was very easy to make the donation at the Goodwill. I simply pulled my vehicle into their donation garage, and a worker came out to greet me and took my donation and handed me a receipt. It was a fast and easy process that gave someone less fortunate than I a chance to get proper clothing for the cold winter months. Donating things is a good way to make sure that the items don’t end up in the land fill, and it gives one the added bonus of feeling good about themselves.

Physical Wellness

Dimension: Physical
Activity: Visit the UND Wellness Center and do 30 minutes of cardio activity
Sunday, January 22 at 3:10pm

The activity for the physical dimension was to go to the Wellness Center and do at least thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise. I chose to do this activity because I have been working to get into better shape and lose some weight as per request of my physician. I had only been to the Wellness Center a few times before Sunday because my family gave m a membership to a different gym that I can access 24/7 (I have a weird work schedule) for Christmas. I was a little concerned that it would be too busy for my comfort, (as it has been in the past when I’ve gone) but it wasn’t. I am not a fan of working out around a whole lot of people or with groups of people for some reason. I ended up doing thirty-five minutes on the elliptical/crossramp machine with a couple of minutes of stretching on either end. Exercising makes me feel more focused and just better in general, so that definitely helps me concentrate on my class work, and I sleep better at night which gives me more energy during the day.
