Summer Health and Safety: Chillin’ and Grillin’

Now that the first day of Summer is officially here, there is absolutely no excuse not to be grilling outside and enjoying the weather – if you haven’t started already. Relaxing with friends and eating hotdogs is all well and good, but it is also important to make sure you are engaging in healthful activities. This can include everything from food safety to protecting  yourself from the sun. Read on for a list of precautions to take when you are chillin’ and grillin’!

Food Facts:

  • Always make sure to thoroughly cook all meat and poultry. Use a meat thermometer so you know when the grilled meats are “done.” Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of about 160 Farenheit.
  • Do NOT put the grilled meat back on the plate which held the raw meat. Always use clean plates because this will help prevent cross-contamination.
  • Before grilling, preheat the coals for about a half hour, or until the coals are lightly coated with ash.
  • Remember to wash hands, utensils and kitchen surfaces with soap and water after contact with raw meat.
  • Clean produce before preparing them for your meal. Tip: Keep your salads fresh and clean by removing the outermost leaves on a head of lettuce or cabbage.
  • After a fun day of grilling and a full meal, you probably want to take a nap. But first, don’t forget to store leftovers in the refrigerator!

Soaking the Sun:

  • Don’t forget to wear sunblock and re-apply every two hours.
  • Wear sunglasses and maybe a hat – they are both chic accessories for summer and they will keep you safe from all those UV rays.
  • Try to avoid grilling outdoors when the temperature is intensely hot.
  • Drink plenty of water (or other decaffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages) to prevent dehydration and over exposure to heat. A good tip is to drink water frequently – even before you feel thirsty.
  • Choose to wear light-colored clothing as well as clothes that aren’t too tight and clingy.

Bugs Be Gone:

  • Use bug repellant, but refrain from using a 2-in-1 bug spray/sunblock. It’s best to use two separate products.
  • Don’t gorget to check your pets for ticks.
  • Do not apply repellant on cuts or wounds.
  • Only apply repellant to skin that is not covered by clothing.
  • Spray repellant away from food.
